Gabon is a country located in Central Africa, bordered by Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and the Republic of the Congo. Libreville is the capital and largest city of Gabon, serving as the economic and cultural center of the country. It also has a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Gabon gained independence from France in 1960 and has since enjoyed relative political stability compared to some of its neighbors in the region. The country has been ruled by the same political party, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), since independence, with a series of presidents from the same family until 2009 when Ali Bongo Ondimba succeeded his father, Omar Bongo, as president.
