Benin is a country located in West Africa, bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso to the northwest, and Niger to the northeast. It has a coastline along the Gulf of Guinea to the south, making it one of the few countries in West Africa with access to the ocean. Porto-Novo is the official capital of Benin, but the largest city and economic center is Cotonou. French is the official language, inherited from its colonial past, but numerous indigenous languages such as Fon and Yoruba are also spoken.
