Libya is a country located in North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad to the south, Niger to the southwest, Algeria to the west, and Tunisia to the northwest. It is the fourth largest country in Africa by land area and is known for its vast desert landscapes. Tripoli is the capital and largest city of Libya, while Benghazi is the second largest city. Arabic is the official language, and Italian and English are also widely understood, especially in business and higher education. Libya has a rich history that includes ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans. The region was part of the Ottoman Empire before becoming an Italian colony in the early 20th century. Libya gained independence in 1951.
