Recognizing your own emotional and physical responses to difficult interactions is the first step. Understanding how you react allows you to better manage those reactions.

Avoid labeling people as “difficult.” This creates biases. Instead, focus on understanding their behaviors. Shifting your perspective can open up more effective communication pathways.

Asking questions to understand the motivations behind difficult behaviors is essential. By seeking to understand “why,” you can develop more empathetic and effective responses.

You cannot control other people’s actions, but you can control your own reactions. Developing strategies to manage your responses is key to navigating difficult interactions.

Understanding behavioral patterns, and attempting to predict potential behavioral responses, gives you the ability to prepare yourself, and in some situations, to influence the outcome of the interaction.
