Most of the large African game species occur in Mapungubwe National Park. When the Limpopo River is not in flood, they roam freely across it to Botswana and Zimbabwe and back.
The park protects the historical site of Mapungubwe Hill, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Mapungubwe, as well as the wildlife and riverine forests along the Limpopo River.
The Mapungubwe Hill was the site of a community dating back to the Iron Age.
 The National Park borders Mapuse Private Game Reserve to the south.
The park was established in 1995 and covers an area of over 28,000 hectares (69,000 acres).
Africa is known for its variety of national parks/game reserves where an assortment of wildlife resides, such as: Chobe National Park (Botswana), Lower Zambezi River National Park (Zambia) as well as Mount Kenya National Park (Kenya) to name but a few.
