Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean, about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) off the southeast coast of the African continent. It includes the main island of Mauritius and several smaller islands and islets, including Rodrigues, Agalega, and the Cargados Carajos Shoals. Port Louis is the capital and largest city of Mauritius. English is the official language, but French and Mauritian Creole are widely spoken. Mauritius is known for its diverse and multicultural society, with a rich blend of cultures, languages, and religions. The island's history includes periods of Dutch, French, and British colonization before gaining independence from the United Kingdom on March 12, 1968. Mauritius became a republic within the Commonwealth in 1992. The country's economy is diverse and has transitioned from being primarily based on sugarcane cultivation to a more diversified economy with strong sectors in tourism, textiles, financial services, and information technology.
