São Tomé and PrÃncipe is a small island nation located in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western coast of Central Africa. It consists of two main islands, São Tomé and PrÃncipe, and several smaller islets. The islands are situated about 140 kilometers (87 miles) apart and are known for their lush rainforests, volcanic landscapes, and beautiful beaches. São Tomé is the capital and largest city of São Tomé and PrÃncipe. Portuguese is the official language, and Forro, Angolar, and Principense are widely spoken creole languages. The country gained independence from Portugal on July 12, 1975. São Tomé and PrÃncipe is a semi-presidential republic, with a president serving as the head of state and a prime minister as the head of government.
