Senegal is a country located in West Africa, bordered by Mauritania to the north and northeast, Mali to the east, Guinea to the southeast, and Guinea-Bissau to the southwest. The Atlantic Ocean forms its western border. The Gambia forms a narrow strip within Senegal, following the Gambia River inland from the Atlantic. Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal. French is the official language, inherited from its colonial past, but numerous indigenous languages such as Wolof, Serer, and Pulaar are also widely spoken.
