Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands located in the Indian Ocean, off the eastern coast of Africa, northeast of Madagascar. It is renowned for its stunning beaches, coral reefs, and nature reserves, as well as for its unique wildlife, including giant Aldabra tortoises. Victoria is the capital and largest city of Seychelles, situated on the island of Mahé. The official languages are Seychellois Creole, English, and French. Historically, Seychelles was uninhabited until the 17th century, when it was first visited by European explorers. The islands were later colonized by the French in the 18th century and then became a British colony in the 19th century. Seychelles gained independence from the United Kingdom on June 29, 1976.
