Algeria is a country located in North Africa, bordered by Tunisia and Libya to the northeast, Niger and Mali to the south, Mauritania and Western Sahara to the southwest, Morocco to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north. It is the largest country in Africa by land area. It was colonized by France in the 19th century and gained independence after a prolonged war of liberation in 1962. The capital and largest city of Algeria is Algiers, situated along the Mediterranean coast. Arabic is the official language, while Berber is also widely spoken, particularly in the Kabylie region.
