Burkina Faso is a landlocked country located in West Africa, bordered by Mali to the north and west, Niger to the east, Benin to the southeast, Togo and Ghana to the south, and Ivory Coast to the southwest. Ouagadougou is the capital and largest city of Burkina Faso. French is the official language, inherited from its colonial past, but indigenous languages such as Moore and Dioula are also widely spoken. Burkina Faso gained independence from France in 1960 and was formerly known as Upper Volta until 1984 when it changed its name to Burkina Faso, which means "Land of Honest Men" in the Mossi and Dioula languages.
