Cabo Verde, also known as Cape Verde, is an island country located in the central Atlantic Ocean, approximately 570 kilometers (350 miles) off the western coast of Africa. It consists of ten volcanic islands, nine of which are inhabited, and is part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, which also includes the Azores, Canary Islands, and Madeira. Praia is the capital and largest city of Cabo Verde, situated on the island of Santiago. Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu), a Portuguese-based creole language, is widely spoken in everyday life and varies slightly between islands. The islands of Cabo Verde were uninhabited until they were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century. The location of the islands made them an important hub for the transatlantic slave trade. Cabo Verde gained independence from Portugal on July 5, 1975. Cabo Verde is a stable parliamentary representative democratic republic.
