Guinea is a country located in West Africa, bordered by Guinea-Bissau and Senegal to the north, Mali to the northeast, Ivory Coast to the east, Liberia to the south, and Sierra Leone to the southwest. It has a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Conakry is the capital and largest city of Guinea. French is the official language, inherited from its colonial past, but numerous indigenous languages are also spoken. Guinea gained independence from France in 1958 and has experienced periods of political instability and authoritarian rule since then. The political system is a semi-presidential republic, with a president serving as the head of state and government.
