Liberia is a country located on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone to the northwest, Guinea to the north, Côte d'Ivoire to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. It is Africa's oldest republic, founded in 1847 by freed African American and Caribbean slaves. Monrovia is the capital and largest city of Liberia. English is the official language, but numerous indigenous languages are also spoken. Liberia's history is unique among African nations due to its founding by the American Colonization Society as a settlement for freed slaves from the United States and the Caribbean.
