Mali is a landlocked country located in West Africa, bordered by Algeria to the north, Niger to the east, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast to the south, Guinea to the southwest, Senegal and Mauritania to the west. It is the eighth-largest country in Africa by land area. Bamako, situated on the Niger River, is the capital and largest city of Mali. French is the official language, inherited from its colonial past, but numerous indigenous languages are also spoken.
